Four cities from Andhra Pradesh — Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Nellore and Vijayawada — have featured among the world’s top 1,000 cities in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026.
The Oxford annual index evaluates 1,000 of the largest urban economies across 163 countries based on five parameters – economics, human capital, environment, quality of life and governance.
Guntur has emerged as the highest-ranked city in Andhra Pradesh, standing 739 globally. Its ranking is attributed to its human capital, agricultural and commercial activity and regional connectivity.
Visakhapatnam ranked 755 globally and second among the four AP cities. The city has been ranked 54th globally in economic growth momentum projections among the cities expected to record strong economic acceleration. Its port operations, industrial activity, IT and data centre clusters, and educational institutions are cited among its economic drivers.
Nellore ranked 893 globally. Its position has been attributed to its location along the Chennai-Bengaluru industrial corridor, proximity to port infrastructure, and its aquaculture and manufacturing sectors.
Vijayawada ranked 932 globally. The Oxford index identified the city among those projected to record strong GDP growth through 2035, with contributions from its service sector, transit corridors, and commercial activity.
State policy planners said the inclusion of four AP cities in Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 reflects the diverse economic activities across Andhra Pradesh, including maritime logistics in Visakhapatnam, agro-commercial activity in Guntur, manufacturing in Nellore, and commercial services in Vijayawada.
Officials said the global rankings could help attract investments and support infrastructure development across the state.
