TERPS REPORT

Buzz Williams begins his second season in College Park after a rough 12-21 campaign. Maryland was picked to finish 12th in the 18-team Big 10 preseason poll. In their season opening win over Bucknell the Terps had five in double figures – Andre Mills (returning), Kaden House (freshman), Pharrel Payne (returning), D.J. Wagner (Arkansas), and Tomislav Buljan (New Mexico). Much hyped local freshman Baba Oladotun (Silver Spring) scored seven points in 19 minutes off the bench. Oladotun chose Maryland over Georgetown.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?
Local bragging rights. A solid non-conference win on the resume come March. Maybe winning over some local fans? It goes without saying that this is a pretty big game for two teams that struggled last season.

Georgetown will try and beat Maryland in consecutive games for the first time since the 1979-80 season when the Hoyas took down the Terps in December and then again in the NCAA Tournament. Saturday’s game will be just the seventh meeting since 1980, with two more scheduled to follow.

Hoyas coach Ed Cooley gave his thoughts on the matchup during a Thursday media availability.

Is it a rivalry right now?

“I think it’s early in the process to call it a rivalry. It probably should evolve to that given the proximity of the universities. It’s something that we hope can turn into that. It’s a game that both teams desperately have to try and win. To me, when the selection committee looks at it sometime in March, this will be one of the games—if we’re fortunate, if they’re fortunate to be an at large team—if we don’t win our respective conference championships. It’s one of those games again long winded answer to eventually evolve into something that we can call a rivalry game.”

“We need a home court advantage as much as we can,” Cooley said about Georgetown’s homecourt situation.

“We play in one of the largest arenas in college basketball here in Washington which is a plus sometimes but it’s also a negative if we don’t have enough people in there making enough noise and energy to give us that extra boost when we need it.”

Cooley confirmed that Georgetown will be without Vyctorious Miller (Oklahoma State).
