Gardeners’ World presenter Frances Tophill has opened up about her feelings towards the BBC show, more than a decade after her first appearance in 2016

Gardener Frances Tophill, one of the stars of BBC Gardeners’ World, has admitted there is one thing fans get wrong about her and her career. Frances who made her Gardeners’ World debut in 2016 and has won over countless viewers in the decade since.

However Frances, 36, has in recent years spoken about what her life is like away from the camera and the realities of filming. She has addressed what sort of impact said filming has on her ability to garden. Now, Frances has gone even further and opened up in greater depth about her feelings towards presenting.

Speaking on The Plant Pod podcast, she spoke about why, despite the television work, she has decided to have a gardening job too. She explained: “I’ve always tried to keep a gardening job just to feel grounded, but it does get harder and harder to do that.

“And you have to be really, really, kind of stick your neck out and be a bit stubborn with TV people about it and say, ‘I really can’t come. I’m gardening that day.’”

She added: “Gardening is not a particularly well paid job. When you’re doing jobbing gardening for other people it’s not per day as well paid as TV presenting, but then you get more regular days. Whereas TV presenting, you know, this year including Chelsea and Hampton Court, I’ve probably done about 15 days and then you travel either side of that it sort of takes up a lot more your time.

“So actually doing gardening jobs is really important for the winter, just to keep working. So it’s an interesting lifestyle, but I don’t’ think it’s quite as glamorous as people imagine it is.”

In the same interview Frances said that if she were to do her life again, she may not make the same decision to commit to a public career in television.

She said: “And I don’t even know if I made the right call. You know there’s a part of me that thinks it would have been lovely just to be a gardener. And now you sort of get used to this slightly busy lifestyle and you think, ‘Well, could I cope with that now? Could I cope with not being freelance, not being my own boss?'”.

“And, you know, it’s a funny one, but I think if people are going into gardening, I would say if they love gardening, they should just stick with gardening. It’s a funny thing…I know lots of people want to go, you know, you think it’s this amazing job and it is.”
