German word of the day: Strammer Max

Germany has a long-running love affair with open sandwiches and Strammer Max has arguably set the standard for years. But now there’s a newcomer muscling in on his territory.

What does Strammer Max mean?

Strammer Max is a traditional German open-faced sandwich made with buttered rye bread, ham and one or two fried eggs.

Often served with pickles and tomatoes, it’s hearty, simple and deeply satisfying.

Grammatically, Strammer Max is a noun phrase consisting of the adjective stramm and the masculine proper name Max. The adjective appears here as strammer because there is no article before it.

You may also encounter der stramme Max. Here, the definite article der changes the adjective ending from -er to -e, because the article already signals the noun’s gender and case.

In German grammar, this is known as the strong masculine nominative ending -er.

The adjective stramm can mean “tight”, “taut”, “firm” or “stiff”, depending on the context. When describing a person, it can mean “strapping”, “robust” or “well-built”.

Historically, the sandwich name is said to have carried a double meaning, since early twentieth-century Berlin slang associated ein strammer Max with – ahem – male vigour and stamina.

Why do I need to know Strammer Max?

Sooner or later, if you spend enough time in Germany, you’ll spot Strammer Max on a menu in a Kneipe, bakery café or canteen.

Thanks to its combination of bread, ham, eggs and enough calories to persuade you that life is worth living again, the dish enjoys near-legendary status as a hangover cure.

It’s also the perfect emergency meal when you’re hungry, short on time and unwilling to engage in anything resembling serious cooking.

The sandwich recently gained fresh competition from a newcomer known as the Faule Herren-Schnitte (lazy gentleman’s sandwich).

The challenger snack starts with many of the same ingredients – bread, ham and fried egg – but it’s topped with cheese and then baked in the oven to create a crispy, melted effect.
