Hyderabad: Opposition parties criticised the Telangana government’s response to the drought situation at an all-party meeting held at the Secretariat on Wednesday to discuss El Nino and drought preparedness.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, leaders of various political parties said the government needed to do much more and had failed to provide satisfactory answers to their questions.

BRS leaders demanded compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre for farmers and expressed disappointment over the government’s response at the meeting.

Former agriculture minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy said, “We told the government it lacked the foresight to tackle the drought.”

“We also wanted to know whether the government would provide financial assistance under the scheme for the Yasangi season,” he said.

He said the BRS, as a responsible Opposition party, would support the government if it took appropriate measures to mitigate the drought and help affected people.

“We will wait for the government’s action plan before commenting further,” he said.

The BJP also expressed disappointment, saying the government had failed to provide satisfactory answers to the questions raised at the meeting.

BJP legislature party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy said the government failed to give any assurance on compensation to farmers who lost their crops during the kharif season, and compensation for the Yasangi season, as the government had advised farmers against cultivating crops.

He said other states, such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, had already allocated funds to help farmers and other sections of the people affected by the drought and questioned why the Telangana government has failed to do so.

The meeting was attended by Telangana Farmers’ Commission chairman M. Kodanda Reddy; BRS leaders B. Vinod Kumar, L. Ramana, and Singireddy Niranjan Reddy, BJP’s Aleti Maheshwar Reddy and M. Komuraiah, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi, CPI’s Palla Venkat Reddy and Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao; CPM’s John Wesley, Telangana Jana Samithi’s Prof. M. Kodandaram and leaders from the Samajwadi Party, RJD, BSP, and the Aam Aadmi Party.
