In a new Instagram post about ‘mistakes’, Gregg Wallace took a swipe at the latest viewing figures for MasterChef following his departure and slammed Prue Leith for jokes made on Bake Off
Gregg Wallace has taken aim at both MasterChef and Prue Leith in his latest Instagram post. After uploading a video about “mistakes” he had made, the former TV chef responded to comments, lashing out at MasterChef’s viewing figures and Prue Leith’s jokes on The Great British Bake Off.
In the video, Wallace asked himself what the “biggest mistake” he made was. “Television,” he responded. “But not what you think. Not how I behaved, because, think about this: If I hadn’t behaved in the same way as everyone around me and in a way that the management thought was acceptable, I wouldn’t have had such a successful career across so many shows for so long.
“No, no, no. Not my behaviour. Actually, [it was] not getting out sooner. Not realising the way it was going and not being brave enough to get out quicker.”
In the comments, one viewer implied Wallace hadn’t done well since leaving television and starting his Youtube series. They wrote: “Life is funny isn’t it? One minute you’re on the BBC, co-hosting a flagship show watched by millions. Then all of a sudden your reviewing KFC out the back of you car.”
In response, Wallace said: “I think you should look at MasterChef figures since I left. I think you should look at the viewing figures of terrestrial television. I think you should then look at the viewing figures of You Tube. Looking forward to you coming back to me.”
For its first revamped series, MasterChef launched just shy of 1.7million, with 500,000 viewers than the previous series. Wallace’s Youtube series, The Gregg Wallace Way, has approximately 12,800 subscribers and his videos tend to garner 10,000 to 54,000 views.
In another comment, Wallace referred to Prue Leith, a former judge on The Great British Bake Off. He implied that the jokes he made on the set of MasterChef – which led to complaints – were of the same level as Leith’s jokes on Bake Off. Wallace also referenced another joke made by a contestant.
He said: “Prue Leith on one episode said ‘I like two holes so that I can squirt’. On another episode I saw lately Paul Hollywood said to a gay contestant ‘I like your crack’ the contestant then said ‘that’s great, but what about my biscuit?’ I don’t have a problem with it. But it turns out lots of people had a problem with that language when it was used on MasterChef.”
While Wallace left the BBC under a cloud of scandal following an investigation into his conduct towards women on the show, Leith has not been subject to investigation and there is no reason to believe anyone was offended by her joke. The Mirror has reached out to her representative for comment.
Leith is instead no longer on Bake Off as she stepped down to reclaim her summers and take care of her health. She admitted on The Shift podcast that she had started to feel unsteady on her feet. “They wanted us to dance round this field. And it was a very hummocky, uneven, field, which of course Noel could really leap over brilliantly and Paul perfectly good,” she explained.
“But I suddenly realised ‘I’m going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief’. So I said ‘I don’t want to do it’, and they understood – they were fine. Gradually, there had been more and more of those things.”
