Halle Berry and David Justice tied the knot back in 1993. Their marriage did not last long, and they separated in 1996. Their divorce was finalized a year later, in 1997. David opened up about their brief marriage and why he left her nearly three decades after their split during a 2025 interview on the All the Smoke podcast.
According to the former MLB star, his expectations of a “traditional” wife shaped how he viewed his relationship with Halle Berry in the mid-1990s. In fact, David admitted that if he and Halle had known about counseling when they were still married, they “probably could have made it.”
Since David Justice was pretty young when he married Halle Berry, he had limited relationship experience. This led him to assume that a wife should cook, clean, and have strong maternal instincts. When he did not see these traits in Halle, David questioned if it would even be the right thing to start a family together. He said:
“She don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t seem like motherly.”
David also admitted that their work schedules would often keep them apart for long stretches. This included Halle filming in different countries. All these things impacted their relationship and led to David and Halle Berry’s divorce.

The incident in question took place on September 26, 2026, when Halle Berry entered her 12-year-old son, Maceo’s room when he was playing a virtual reality game. Becoming furious at her son, Halle began pushing him, leading Maceo to ask her to stop. According to Halle’s ex-husband and Maceo’s father, Oliver Martinez, the actress told their son that he looked “so stupid” and that he was “such an idiot” for playing with the VR glasses.
Things did not stop there; Halle Berry reportedly “grabbed Maceo by the neck and started choking him while shouting, ‘Who is dominant now?! Who is dominant?” After managing to “fight back,” Maceo finally managed to escape his mother’s grip. Halle’s boyfriend had also entered the scene after he heard the boy screaming.
The entire ordeal had left the 12-year-old in a “panicked state,” prompting him to beg his father to “come pick him up right now.” Oliver revealed that the call from his son lasted around 27 seconds. As he headed towards Halle Berry’s home, Maceo texted him, writing, “Are you here? Please come.” Oliver assured his son that he was on the way and just 8 minutes away.
After Oliver reached there, Maceo came out, followed by Halle’s boyfriend, who was carrying a bag with the boy’s clothes. Later, Halle allegedly reached out to her ex-husband and texted him that she “felt terrible about what happened last night.” When Oliver informed her that Maceo had asked him to pick him up, the actress got upset. She told him that their son could not fight with his mother and added:
“This is wrong, Oliver, I’m his mother, and this is wrong! He had no respect for his mother, and this should not be ok for you as his father!”
