Haveri: A 60-year-old businessman was allegedly beaten to death after he intervened in an altercation triggered by a dispute over payment for eggs at his shop in Rattihalli town of Haveri district on Wednesday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Shivarajirao Bairoji (60), a businessman and resident of Janata Plot in Rattihalli.

According to the complaint lodged with the Rattihalli police by his son Bharath, a person by name Vasim had been visiting their shop frequently and picking up arguments over business transactions.

On Wednesday at around 7 pm, he allegedly came to the shop and asked for five eggs. While the accused claimed that he had already paid Rs 500, the complainant maintained that the accused had paid Rs 100 and not Rs 500.

The argument soon escalated, with the accused allegedly abusing the complainant in foul language before grabbing him by the collar and assaulting him.

Hearing the commotion, Shivarajirao stepped in to separate the two. Police said the accused allegedly picked up a stone lying nearby and struck Shivajirao on the chest.

The complaint further alleged that other men, who had accompanied the main accused, joined the assault. They allegedly threatened the victim and his son before throwing Shivarajirao to the ground and repeatedly kicking him on the chest and other parts of the body.

Family members rushed the injured man to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Based on the complaint, the Rattihalli police have registered a case against four persons and launched an investigation into the incident. The four accused are identified as Vasium, Sarfaraz, Sadhik and Siraj.

The incident also resulted in tension in the region. Security has been beefed up. Senior police officials led by IGP Ravikanthe Gowda, SP Yashoda Vantagodi visited the place.

Reacting to the incident, Haveri MP and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai described the killing as “highly condemnable” and alleged a complete breakdown of law and order in Haveri district.

In a post on X, he claimed that police stations had turned into “collection centres” and alleged that the accused are not arrested despite complaints against them, allowing them to roam freely.

Bommai urged the Director General and Inspector General of Police to initiate stringent action against the accused.
