Racehorse Ohope Wins was euthanised after a fall during the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday. Her death has led to calls for greater accountability over the safety of horses used in racing.
The mare fell after another horse, Half Yours, went down in the closing stages of the race. Racing Victoria, the state’s racing authority, said vets attended to her immediately but could not save her because of her injury.
Half Yours got back to his feet and returned to the mounting yard.
Speaking to ABC, animal welfare campaigner Elio Celotto called for the racing industry to take greater responsibility for horse deaths. He argued that the issue went beyond one horse or one race.
Trainer Peter Moody defended the industry. He said safety measures had improved, including checks before horses are allowed to compete.
