Nov. 6—EUGENE — The Oregon Ducks shot 60% from the field and led by double digits for the entire second half in a 98-71 victory over the Eastern Washington men’s basketball team Friday at Matthew Knight Arena.

Freshman Malachi Richmond scored a team-high 14 points in the second game of his college career for the Eagles, who also got 13 points from redshirt sophomore Jamil Miller and 10 points from senior Alton Hamilton IV. As a team the Eagles shot 45% (26 of 58) from the field but made just 14 of 23 free throws (61%).
Eastern (0-2) was still without guards Andrew Cook and Tavi Jackson, though redshirt freshman forward Alan Gballou made his season — and collegiate — debut. He played seven minutes and scored three points.
For the second straight game, the Eagles were dominated in the paint, where the Ducks had a 54-32 scoring advantage. The Ducks (2-0) also had 26 assists, nearly twice the Eagles’ total of 14. Oregon also outrebounded Eastern, 38-24.
The Eagles played the Ducks level for 10 minutes and even took a two-point lead, 24-22, on a Hamilton layup. But over the next 10 minutes the Ducks built a 14-point lead, capped by a Fred Payne 3-pointer with 26 seconds to go. That gave Oregon a 53-39 lead heading into halftime.

Eastern Washington 76, UC Davis 72: Sophomore guard Elyn Bowers scored a career-high 30 points for the Eagles (1-1), who used a substantial free throw disparity to offset their inconsistent offensive performance and clipped the Aggies (1-1) at Reese Court in EWU’s home opener.

Bowers shot 8 of 20 from the field and 12 of 14 from the foul line, surpassing her previous career high of 26 points. Jaecy Eggers added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Kourtney Grossman also had a double-double for EWU, logging 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Eagles let an 11-point, third-quarter lead slip and the Aggies rallied to go ahead late, but EWU pulled back in front in the final minute and hit clutch free throws to seal its first win.
EWU shot 32.3% from the field and just 5 of 20 from 3-point range, but went 29 of 38 on free throws compared to just a 3-for-8 mark from the line for the Aggies, who knocked down 17 3-pointers. Avery Sussex led UC Davis with 24 points, hitting six triples.
