A San Antonio sportscaster shocked viewers by announcing his sudden departure from the anchor desk, and he thanked the city in one final broadcast.

Former KENS 5 sports anchor Nate Ryan revealed his exit from the station on Tuesday, November 4. On social media, he said, “It’s been the ultimate privilege to represent this station, continuing a legacy that’s spanned over 75 years. To have led the Sports Department for the last 4+ years is one of the honors of my life.” His last broadcasts were 6 and 10 p.m. Thursday evening, during which he looked back on his time and thanked the city.

“I love what I do,” Ryan said. “When KENS hired me, people kept telling me, ‘You’re the third sports anchor in 50 years to hold that seat. No pressure.’ Tonight ends that run, but every single day over the last four-plus years, my colleagues trusted me with the rope when oftentimes, it seemed short. For that, I thank my bosses, news director Jack Acosta, every producer, every director, an everyone behind the scenes for their patience. Same for our sports crew – photographer Jason Eggleston and I have traveled coast to coast giving you live coverage that I couldn’t do alone. You see his work every night.”

Continuing, Ryan shouted out Vinnie Vinzetta, “a fantastic storyteller and my rolodex for any sports administrator in the state of Texas.” He also praised co-anchors Isis Romero and Henry Ramos, as well as weather chief Bill Taylor. Ryan said his favorite part of the day is 10:07 p.m. when he walks onto set.

“My home, where my parents are probably watching right now, that’s far away,” the Chicago native said. “But for the last half decade, this set, with them and with you watching, has been the closest thing. So thank you for letting me into your homes. I hope you still do, even after I leave this building.”

It won’t be the last of him that San Antonians see, though. During the final broadcast, Ryan didn’t talk too much about his next move, but he did say that he hopes San Antonio will welcome him back into their living rooms soon. For a few seasons, Ryan has been a familiar face during Spurs broadcasts, and that may continue to be the case.

“Might be sooner than you think, maybe even tomorrow night,” he said. The Spurs play tonight against the Sacramento Kings. “I’m proud to be a part of this station, and most importantly, I’m proud to represent this oh-so-strong San Antonio community. Good night. Go Spurs Go.”

KENS 5 says goodbye to one sports anchor as former anchor returns

The announcement and departure come just days after KENS 5 welcomed back former sports anchor Casey Viera, who was with the station from 2022 until May 2025. He announced his return to the station on October 29, and he told MySA he never wanted to leave in the first place. His contract with KENS 5 timed out as TEGNA and Nexstar merged, he said. He’ll continue his work with Locked On Spurs because the show is also a TEGNA property.

“Most people don’t get the opportunity that I get that I’ve received with this once, let alone twice,” Viera said. “I just want people to know that the magnitude of the job, whatever it may be, doesn’t get beyond me. I enjoy what I do.”
