It is game day once again, Hawkeye fans!
Your Iowa Hawkeyes are on the road to Evanston, Illinois to square off with the Northwestern Wildcats under the lights of the new Ryan Field.
Iowa and Northwestern meet tonight for the 87th time with matching 6-2 records, matching 3-2 league marks and one incredibly narrow playoff lane between them. The Hawkeyes arrive fresh off a 30-0 shutout of Wisconsin and a #19 debut in the first College Football Playoff rankings. The Wildcats return home again after a competitive loss at Oregon knocked them out of the polls. They’ll be coming back to the new Ryan Field, where Northwestern has won all five games it has played this season.

This one was poised to be a proverbial shootout, by former Big Ten West standards. The Cats come into the day with the 84th ranked total defense nationally. They’re 75th against the run, 94th against the pass and tied for 100th in sacks with 13 all season. After getting right against Wisconsin a week ago, this one should be an opportunity for the Hawkeye offense to build some momentum.
The real challenge comes on the other side of the ball, where new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has things humming for the Wildcats. Northwestern is top-35 nationally in scoring offense, averaging 33.6 points per game and a top-30 in total offense at 438.1 yards per game.
But Friday afternoon, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles is expected to miss tonight’s game with an upper body injury, with no timeline for his return. Chiles had been listed as questionable on the Wednesday and Thursday availability reports, and as of Friday night Northwestern had made no official announcement – but every beat writer on both sides is preparing for a Wildcats offense without its engine.
It’s hard to overstate how big that is. Chiles has completed 68.8% of his passes for 1,898 yards with 13 touchdowns against a single interception, added 274 rushing yards and a team-best 10 scores on the ground and owns the third-best passer rating in the Big Ten. He accounted for five touchdowns in a game twice this season, picking up conference player of the week honors both times. Chip Kelly’s offense hums because of him.

That leaves it to Nicco Marchiol. The left-handed West Virginia transfer lost the camp battle to Chiles in August and has thrown exactly one pass in purple, an incompletion in garbage time. The resume isn’t empty – he went 6-2 as a starter for the Mountaineers and completed 62% of his career passes there. But his 2025 season ended with a foot injury after four starts and tonight would be his first start in more than a year, against a defense that just posted a shutout.
What does it mean for the game plan? Well, the quarterback run game that produced 10 of Northwestern’s rushing touchdowns is now a question mark, so expect heavier doses of Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon II – and expect Phil Parker to pack the box and make a backup making his first start beat the fourth-ranked scoring defense in the country through the air. I’d also expect Parker to be pretty vanilla in the first half while he figures out just how to tighten the screws against Marchiol without exposing the secondary too much with Kelly looking for options. Then the pressure is likely to be dialed up in the second half.
The betting market did the math immediately. This line opened at Northwestern -2.5 and sat at -3 as late as midweek. On the news Friday afternoon it had flipped all the way to Iowa, with FanDuel at Iowa -1.5 and the total down to 43.5 off its midweek high of 45.5. The market just priced one quarterback at roughly five points.
Iowa isn’t at full strength either. Center Cael Winter is out, handing Michael Myslinski his first start in the middle of the line. Zach Lutmer and Jaylen Watson are questionable in the secondary and Kirk Ferentz said this week that an unusually high number of players were held out of practice. Winning ugly on the road may require some depth tonight.
