SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed strong support for the INDIA bloc’s massive protest march in Delhi, saying he was “pleased” to see citizens turning out in large numbers to defend democratic rights. Abdullah’s party, the NC, is a constituent of the opposition INDIA alliance.

In a post on ‘X’, Abdullah wrote that it was “great to see tens of thousands march with the INDIA bloc in Delhi today demanding that the democratic rights of citizens are protected. We stand together in this fight.” He said the turnout reflected growing public concern over what opposition parties describe as attempts to undermine democratic institutions.

His remarks came a day after he sharply criticised the Delhi Police for what he called an “unacceptable use of force” during Sunday’s protest. Referring to an incident in which an MP was allegedly beaten by police personnel, Abdullah said the behaviour was indefensible.

He posted: “Unacceptable use of force by Delhi Police. Beating up an unarmed protestor, setting aside the fact that in this case the victim is actually an elected member of Parliament, is unacceptable under any circumstances & is indefensible. I join all my @JKNC_ colleagues in condemning this reprehensible brutality.”

Abdullah’s statements add to the chorus of opposition voices accusing the government of suppressing peaceful demonstrations. The INDIA bloc has vowed to continue its nationwide campaign to “restore democratic norms” and resist what it calls authoritarian tendencies.
