Huw Edwards has risked the wrath of the public after revealing his latest project in a bid to get back into journalism following his sacking from the BBC
Disgraced TV newsreader Huw Edwards is facing a backlash after launching his own newsletter three years after his last broadcast.
Edwards, 64, has launched a Substack and said he wants to make a “positive contribution” around mental health and rebuild “some kind of worthwhile life”.
He wrote: “There will be some who do not wish to read my work, and I respect that choice. But for those who might be interested, I would like to start tentatively by offering some commentary and analysis based on my long experience.”
The former BBC presenter, 64, was axed from his role and handed a six-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.
He had admitted to possessing 41 indecent images of children. Seven of those images were classed as the most serious category A abuse, while two of the images were of victims aged seven to nine years old.
Edwards wrote: “I would like to offer thoughts on matters of national and local interest. These include the state of our politics, the media, journalism, and culture. But in light of my recent experiences, I would also like to talk about the criminal justice system: the courts, the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the Probation Service.
“I am also ready to be unflinchingly honest about the reality of long-term mental illness, and the continued failure to recognise its devastating effects on affected individuals, their families and friends. If my posts help others facing similar challenges, so much the better.”
Edwards was one of the BBC’s highest-paid newsreaders, but was sacked in 2024 after his guilty plea and sentence. Now, though, he wants to make his way back into the industry and the move doesn’t sit well with everyone.
One person fumed: “No mention of his crimes, other than to suggest his mental health issues are what led him to offend. Disgraceful.” Another added: “I don’t know what’s worse convicted sex offender Huw Edwards launches his own substack page or that 65 people have subscribed to it.”
The news comes after Edwards was reportedly ready to “state his case” in a new documentary. It is set to follow a Channel 5 dramatisation that aired in March. Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards was broadcast, but was criticised by the former presenter, who called it a “one-sided account”.
He said: “Other opportunities will arise later this year for me to state my case and to challenge the misleading or fabricated claims made in recent coverage.
“Serious questions still remain to be answered, and not just by me. It will now take some time for me to produce my own account, and until then I do not intend to comment any further.”
