A chef who has cooked with James Martin has revealed what it was like to work with the Saturday Morning presenter

A top chef who has cooked with James Martin says the TV star showed his true colours in an instant. James, 53, has been a staple on British television since the 1990s when he appeared on shows such as Ready Steady Cook and Big Breakfast.

Since then he has gone on to present Saturday Kitchen on the BBC for a decade and now fronts James Martin’s Saturday Morning on ITV. He has also travelled the globe presenting culinary programmes on America, Spain, and even France.

It was the latter where he trained as a chef, starting his career at the Hostellerie De Plaisance in Saint-Émilion. James then moved onto the Maison Troisgros in Roanne, a three Michelin star restaurant, before returning to England.

Alongside his TV and restaurant work, he regularly appears at food festivals up and down the country, as well as penning cookbooks. It was at various festivals that he encountered Edmond Veizaj.

The chef, who runs an award-winning steakhouse in Hampshire, has now shared an insight into what James is like away from screens. Talking to Great British Life, he said: “I used to cook at a lot of food festivals with James Martin and he was always great to cook alongside and was very professional.”

Edmond isn’t the first person to share an insight into what working with James is like. Brothers Rob and David Nicholson from Cannon Hall Farm in Yorkshire appeared on his TV show in 2025.

They described the star as being like a “walking advert for the dairy industry”. It came after David pointed out the generous lashings of butter James likes to use in his recipes, even dedicating a book to it.

Both brothers, however, had nothing but praise for the television personality. Dave remarked: “Wasn’t he a gentleman? He gave us so much time to talk about the farm.”

He continued: “He wasn’t like, ‘Anyway lads’. All the other chefs were cooking away and I thought he really, really looked after us. He gave us a cracking advert for people out there who have never been to the farm to come and have a look around one day.”

Rob described their visit to James’ Hampshire residence as a “10 out of 10 experience”. He elaborated: “From first to last, 10 out of 10. A really memorable experience, really enjoyed it.”

Fellow celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has also spoken highly of James. On Red Richardson’s podcast, he said: “Everyone who does cooking on television has got their own different skill set for different reasons.

“Like James Martin is so good live and he’s brilliant at that, holding a conversation, listening and cooking. He’s a really good cook as well.”

James Martin’s Saturday Morning returns to screens from 9.30am on ITV One. James will be joined at his Hampshire home with actress Kelly Brook as well as chefs Tommy Banks and Alex Dilling, and forager Alysia Vasey.
