Hyderabad: Specialised metal powders used in fighter aircraft engines, defence systems and advanced 3D‑printed components are still largely imported into India, according to researchers and industry partners involved in a new Hyderabad‑led manufacturing project.

To reduce that dependence, IIT Hyderabad, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory and Hyderabad‑based Innomet Advanced Materials Ltd have partnered to develop what they described as India’s first indigenous large‑scale 100 kg inert gas atomiser facility.

The project, titled Indigenous Development of Large Scale (100 kg) Inert Gas Atomiser, is funded by the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence at IIT BHU, Varanasi under the Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management.

The facility, coming up at Innomet’s Hyderabad premises, will manufacture high‑purity spherical alloy powders required in aerospace, defence, energy and advanced manufacturing sectors. Officials said these powders are used in additive manufacturing, hot isostatic pressing, protective coatings and high‑temperature components in gas turbine engines and strategic systems.

The collaboration follows the earlier development of a smaller 10 kg indigenous gas atomiser by the same teams.

According to IIT‑H, the proposed unit will manufacture nickel‑based superalloys for aerospace, ferritic and austenitic steels for nuclear and thermal power, cobalt‑based alloys for protective coatings and emerging high entropy alloys. The facility will also support collaborative research activities of DMRL and IIT‑H for five years after completion.

IIT‑H director Dr B.S. Murty said the collaboration would strengthen the country’s “indigenous advanced materials and strategic manufacturing ecosystem”, while Innomet said the initiative would support domestic manufacturing capability in sectors that currently rely on imports.
