A recent analysis by the Policy Exchange has revealed that Indians constitute the ethnic group with the highest concentration of professional workers in the UK. This report, titled A Portrait of Modern Britain: Ethnicity and Religion, emphasizes the growing complexity of ethnic diversity in the country, arguing that treating ethnic minorities as a single entity for public policy is increasingly inadequate.
The findings indicate that British Indians not only lead in professional representation but also enjoy the highest homeownership rates among ethnic groups, with 71% owning their homes outright or through mortgages. The report underscores that the term “ethnic minority” encompasses a wide range of experiences and disparities, particularly among South Asian communities, making broad categorizations misleading.
Sir Trevor Phillips, a senior fellow at Policy Exchange, highlighted the need for a new national integration strategy, advocating for educational initiatives that instill pride in British heritage while recognizing the country’s diverse history. He noted that recent global conflicts have begun to manifest within UK communities, emphasizing the urgency of managing this diversity to prevent extremism and social discord.
Polling data from the report shows that 72% of respondents believe children should be taught to appreciate British history positively. The analysis draws on 2021 UK Census data and additional surveys, calling for government policies to better reflect the distinct identities and needs of various ethnic groups.
