The 60-year-old flame-haired horticulturist has transformed the gentle art of gardening into prime-time television. Born in West Wellow, Hampshire, Charlie spent her formative years in the picturesque New Forest, where she developed a passion for gardening from an early age.

Within just 12 months, the programme proved such a hit that it was promoted to BBC One, becoming essential prime-time entertainment and attracting more than 12 million viewers at its peak.
Though the show came to an end in 2005, Charlie remained firmly in the television spotlight, fronting programmes including The Joy of Gardening and Charlie’s Garden Army, while also providing coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show, reports Wales Online.

Is Charlie Dimmock married?
Charlie keeps her romantic life away from the limelight and has never been married. Although she has previously opened up about an affair that ended her long-term relationship with viticulturist John Mushet.
During a trip to New Zealand in the early 90s, Charlie met John, and upon their return to the UK, they decided to settle down together, though they never tied the knot.
After 13 years together, the couple split in 2001 following Charlie’s short relationship with Ground Force microphone operator Andy Simmons. The scandal marred Charlie’s tenure on the show when she blurred the lines between professional and personal life.
In 2002, Charlie candidly discussed the affair with the Daily Mail, confessing that she “doesn’t see Andy anymore”. “But I don’t regret what happened. You wouldn’t do anything if you kept worrying about what might go wrong,” she expressed.
In a 2016 interview with the Independent, Charlie revealed her lack of interest in ever walking down the aisle. “I’m way past marriage at this point. I’m going to be 50 this year. Even sharing a house with someone would be a no for me.”
She added: “I like my own company. I like to do what I want to do, I’m very selfish like that. I don’t mind fitting in a bit, but I like to be able to get away and have the house to myself.”
What happened to Charlie Dimmock’s parents?
In December 2004, Charlie’s mother, Sue, then 59, and stepfather, Robert, then 58, both from Hampshire, were among the thousands of holidaymakers who tragically lost their lives when a catastrophic tsunami struck coastlines across Thailand and much of South-East Asia on Boxing Day.
The disaster, among the deadliest in recorded history, claimed around 5,400 lives in Thailand alone, including approximately 2,000 foreign tourists. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Charlie found herself anxiously waiting for any word about her mother and stepfather.
She remained silent about the experience at the time, with her agent releasing a statement: “It is very upsetting for her. It has been too soon for her to come to terms with it.”
Charlie turned down work for the next couple of years as she came to terms with her devastating loss.
