The ongoing investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death has revealed more details about the Heroes actress’ final moments. She died in August aged 36 after suffering the toxic effects of multiple drugs, including fentanyl.
Panettiere died at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, where she was staying with her on-and-off again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach.
Recent report from the Greenville County medical examiner showed that the brothers had found Panettiere unconscious on the sofa of property, turning a deep shade of purple.
According to the report, the brothers tried to wake Panettiere up and administered two doses of Narcan, but failed and called the emergency services. Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also in the report, shared by TMZ, one of the brothers had seen her earlier that day, applying make-up, said he “went back to bed” and only emerged later because there was a knock at the door.
The officers who responded to the death found “blue pressed pills that tested positive for fentanyl, along with a straw on a table, and white powder in a sunglasses case inside her suitcase”.
According to the deputy coroner, the brothers were “unsure” if Panettiere had taken any narcotics whilst she was with them, “because she was very good at hiding them”.
A spokesperson for the Greenville County Coroner’s Office previously confirmed that Panettiere’s death was accidental. They ruled the cause of death as an accidental overdose involving fentanyl as well as anti-anxiety medication, Alprazolam. The other drugs in her system included a muscle relaxer and an antipsychotic medication used to treat major depression.
A press statement shared on Tuesday said: “The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol and Quetiapine. The manner of death has been ruled an accident.” A post-mortem examination found “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death”.
Tributes have poured out for the actress following news of her death, including from her fellow co-stars, Nashville actress Connie Britton, Heroes’ Jack Coleman and Bring It On actress and singer Solange Knowles.
Panettiere started acting as a child, appearing in soap operas before rising to fame for her role in the 2000 sports drama Remember The Titans, and as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug’s Life.
She is best known for her roles in skating film Ice Princess, as cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero sereis Heroes and as up-and-coming country singer Juliette Barnes for six seasons on Nashville.
The actress struggled with fame throughout her life and battled addiction in her 20s, which she discussed in her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning. She also discussed her relationship with Wladimir Klitschko and how she gave him full custody of their now 11-year-old daughter in 2018 amid her struggles.
