If you are a fan of The Big Bang Theory, you are likely one of those who are largely divided on whether or not to watch the iconic sitcom’s spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

Now, he will have to fix what he has broken to restore order and save the universe.
In his new quest, ‘Stuart’ is joined by his girlfriend, ‘Denise’ (Lauren Lapkus), his easygoing geologist friend, ‘Bert’ (Brian Posehn), and the ever-irritating but undeniably brilliant ‘Barry Kripke’ (John Ross Bowie). The four of them will navigate alternate realities, and along the way, crossing their paths will be very different versions of familiar Big Bang Theory characters.
Each episode drops the group into a bizarre new world. Expect zombie-infested wastelands and magical kingdoms, and even universes where humans evolved from cows or transformed into centaurs. The result is a sci-fi sitcom that feels closer to Rick and Morty than the apartment conversations that made The Big Bang Theory famous.

The first episode aired on July 23, 2026, and though it struggles in the beginning, things improve quickly. It opens years after the events of The Big Bang Theory. Stuart is still running the comic book store alongside Denise when an experimental device created by Sheldon and Leonard falls into his possession.
Although the invention was never meant to be activated, Stuart accidentally sets it off, triggering a catastrophic chain reaction that tears open the multiverse and pushes reality toward total collapse. And thus, the apocalypse begins.
Because the show introduces quantum mechanics, alternate timelines and the rules governing the multiverse, the opening episode spends considerable time explaining its complicated premise before the comedy can fully take over.
The first half of the episode may feel clunky, but it’s expected, as the pilot spends most of the time establishing the world and its characters. But critics who watched the full season argue the payoff is worth the slow start.
Will longtime Big Bang Theory fans enjoy it?
While not necessarily a reunion series as many would have hoped, spin-off promises plenty of callbacks, with many beloved characters reportedly making cameos in the upcoming episodes. However, the focus remains firmly on Stuart and the supporting characters who rarely took center stage in the original sitcom, and the classic comedy is definitely there.
Regarding the original show’s flavor, there may not be much, but that could work in the spin-off’s favor. The multiverse format also means beloved characters can appear in completely unexpected versions of themselves. At the same time, if you are hoping for a direct continuation of Sheldon’s or Leonard’s stories, you may be disappointed.
Jim Parsons (‘Sheldon’), Kaley Cuoco (‘Penny’), and Johnny Galecki (‘Leonard’) haven’t been confirmed as full-time cast members of the show, but there are hints that they will appear, though not in their original versions.
While the setup obviously opens the doors for the beloved original cast’s cameo, they may appear as alternate versions. The franchise‘s co-creator, Chuck Lorre, hinted at the possibility of the legacy cast, including cameos by ‘Howard’ (Simon Helberg), ‘Raj’ (Kunal Nayyar), ‘Amy’ (Mayim Bialik), and ‘Bernadette’ (Melissa Rauch).

If you’re expecting another traditional Big Bang Theory sitcom filled with apartment banter and laugh-track humor, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe may come as a surprise. But for viewers willing to embrace its quirky sci-fi premise, the series offers something refreshingly different. While the first episode takes time to establish its complicated multiverse setup, the show is expected to find its rhythm in the later episodes. Perhaps the biggest strength of the spin-off is that it refuses to imitate The Big Bang Theory, and it makes the series worth a watch.
