As his time as a Traitor continues to fascinate fans James Acaster has lifted the lid on what life is like for the celebrities when the cameras aren’t rolling

Famous comedian James Acaster has admitted he was told off by the producers on Celebrity Traitors over a phone call. James, 41, is currently acting as a Traitor on the popular BBC show having originally been a Faithful earlier in the series. He joined Maya Jama and Richard E Grant before the latter was voted out.

James’ position as a Faithful-turned-Traitor has fascinated fans since he made the move across, at the expense of journalist Amol Rajan, but he has now spoken about what life is like behind the scenes on the programme.

Although the show is set in a castle, James said the celebrities all sleep in a Travelodge around 60 minutes from where filming happens. Although this was described as “a trek each morning and night” by James, he added that things got tougher when they were back at the hotel.

While the show is being produced, the contestants are effectively cut off from the outside world and cannot leave the Travelodge without a chaperone. They are also reportedly only allowed a 10-minute phone call with someone close to them.

In James’ case this was his partner, leading to an awkward moment with the show’s producers who were there with him as he had the call to make sure he didn’t reveal anything.

Explaining how awkward this made things, James said: “You can’t have an authentic conversation because you can’t tell them anything that’s happening.

“At one point my partner said, ‘Have you caught the sun?’ I was saying, ‘Oh yeah, we were outside for one of the missions.’ I was told I couldn’t even tell her that.”

James isn’t the only member of the Celebrity Traitors to have offered an insight into what life is like behind-the-scenes on the show.

Clare Balding, who was in the first series, spoke of how they are played music before they go into a segment of the show called the round table.

Speaking on the Inheritance Tracks podcast Clare, 55, explained this was done to ensure the players take the game seriously, otherwise some of them might start making jokes in the moment.

She said “The music for Traitors is really interesting because they play you music at the round table before it starts and that music is really important because it makes you take it seriously.

“Otherwise you’ve got a massive table full of, quite a lot of people, who by their nature, are funny and for a living are funny and they would laugh at it if it wasn’t so serious.

“And that creates an atmosphere, a not always very helpful one if I’m honest, but it’s a fascinating psychological experiment.”

The Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One tonight at 8pm.
