Romesh Ranganathan has addressed what James Acaster was really like on Celebrity Traitors, and how the edit can make a big difference to how contestants are perceived
The Celebrity Traitors winner and comedian Romesh Ranganathan has given an insight into what James Acaster was truly like behind-the-scenes on season two of the BBC programme.
Romesh, 48, won the series alongside 24-year-old actor Sebastian Croft, with both splitting the £83,000 prize money to give to their respective charities.
However, their victory came after Faithful-turned-Traitor James Acaster had been banished due to confessing his true identity in unprecedented scenes.
One of the main sources of tension of the series had been comedian James’ wish to remain a Faithful after being recruited, at the expense of journalist Amol Rajan, who was subsequently knocked out of the programme.
Now, in an interview with Celebrity Traitors season one victor Alan Carr on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, Romesh has given some insight into what James was actually like on the programme.
His insight was prompted when Alan asked: “I saw James Acaster was like a rabbit in headlights, but was he like that, or did they edit it, like, was he quiet?”
In response, Romesh said that James was more vocal in scenes that didn’t make it to the show, explaining: “I don’t think he was quiet. He wasn’t quiet. I think it’s fair to say he was wrestling with being a Traitor, but he wasn’t quiet.”
Romesh went on to add that one the factors playing into the show was that even if someone said a lot during filming, it might not make into the final broadcast and vice versa.
Using himself as an example, Romesh recalled: “You know what it’s like, the Round Table, was so long. There are lots of time, a couple of Round Tables where I remember saying stuff quite a lot and then in the edit, you’re just not in it at all. Just how it works out, but he [James] wasn’t quiet I don’t think.”
This wasn’t the only time James Acaster was discussed. Earlier in the interview, the comedians had shed more light on the Celebrity Traitors experience behind-the-scenes, during which Romesh admitted: “There’s so many things I said and I thought, ‘Please don’t let that make the edit’. There’s one bit that didn’t make the edit and James Acaster was like, he was so excited for this to make the edit.
“At one point at the round table somebody said, ‘Feels like the Traitors are being served up to us on a plate’ and I said, I got so carried away, ‘Well if they’re being served up, let’s eat’.
“As soon as I said that I thought, ‘Dear God please don’t let that…’ and Acaster came up to me afterwards and he goes, ‘I cannot wait for that to go out’. Thankfully they cut it out.”
