A mid-season acquisition turned from a luxury to a necessity. By the end of Jared McCain’s third month on the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 22-year-old suddenly became very important at work. In the latter half of the 2026 Western Conference Finals, they looked to him for buckets as Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell were sidelined.

All things considered, McCain stepped up and delivered. He had two 20-plus point explosions in OKC’s Games 3 and 5 wins. He helped ease some of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander‘s insane scoring load. After being universally viewed as a buy-low candidate, he gave the Thunder a shot to go back-to-back.

Even with the Thunder falling five wins shy of a Larry O’Brien trophy, McCain’s surprising contributions are one of their best stories of the 2025-26 season. The Thunder added him from the Philadelphia 76ers at the NBA trade deadline. Since then, the consensus has been a mixture of puzzlement at his availability and shock that OKC added a top-end scoring talent at a quarter on the dollar.

“When I got traded, I really had no expectation of what was going to come. Because I was like, ‘Why do they want me? At this point, why would they want me on this championship team?,'” McCain said. “But being able to — especially in the beginning, I think Shai and I think Ajay was injured too — to come in and kinda provide some of a role and be able to kinda play through some failures and play through some mistakes. That was great for me and learning about this team.”

Now that McCain has grown past the shock of being traded, he’ll have a full offseason to work on his role with the Thunder. Instead of being forced to learn on the fly. He reflected on his first three months in OKC at his exit interview. Even he was surprised at how much he helped out at the game’s biggest stage.

That’s a pretty strong review by McCain on his initial thoughts on the Thunder. Mostly rolling with the same roster, his arrival marked the first real change to their roster since their 2024 offseason when they added Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso. Going from a play-in team to the title favorite, the 22-year-old seamlessly made the jump.

Flash forward to now, expect the Thunder to go through some roster changes around Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams. A handful of role players will get their futures decided this summer. The upcoming change opens up opportunities for the rest of the roster to step up for next season and beyond.

Expect McCain to be a prime candidate to receive a boost in playing time. He just finished his second year in the league. And after dealing with some injuries, he’s back on track to his previous eye-popping trajectory where he took the NBA by storm.

“That’s what I think this team is about in general. Every player, even if you get a DNP, everybody’s rooting for you. And that’s really hard to find. Like truly in each person I feel on this team. I was just talking with Zai. He really was rooting for me,” McCain said. “And that’s such an awesome feeling to know that when you’re playing through mistakes or you’re not playing as much. To know that your team has confidence in you.”
