As of Wednesday morning, it still wasn’t completely clear how much time Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will miss with the knee injury he suffered during Monday night’s loss to the Rams in Los Angeles.
The fear from the Giants on Tuesday was that the second-year signal-caller could be out for the season, as The Post confirmed, after an MRI revealed concerns greater than the sprained MCL the team believed Dart suffered in the immediate aftermath of the first-quarter injury.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on “Good Morning Football” that “there are a few timelines on the table, none of them very good” for Dart.
It appears that if Dart can avoid surgery, he could possibly return late in the season.
But where the Giants will be at that point is anybody’s guess.
The hire of Super Bowl-winning coach John Harbaugh on a five-year, $100 million contract gave the organization a massive facelift, on the heels of Dart — a first-round pick in 2025 — showing potential to blossom into a franchise quarterback.
Throw in the return of Malik Nabers, the electricity of Cam Skattebo, an improved offensive line and a daunting pass rush, and there were signs the Giants could really take a step back toward relevancy.
In one instant, despair returned.
And Monday injuries suffered by Nabers (shoulder), Brian Burns (ankle) and Andrew Thomas (groin) rubbed salt in the wound.
Now the Giants have to hope veteran Jameis Winston will be much more competent than he was in relief of Dart on Monday, especially with winnable games over the next several weeks: Sunday at home against the Titans, Week 4 at home against the Cardinals and Week 5 on the road against the Commanders, who could be without Jayden Daniels after he dislocated his elbow.
There was enough trust in Winston that the Giants gave him a two-year, $13 million contract extension before Week 1.
If he can keep them afloat and Dart can manage to return late in the season, maybe the Giants can still make something out of this season.
That sounds a lot better than the darkest timeline, where Dart is done for the year and the Giants are a last-place team once again.
