Jay-Z is currently hogging the limelight for his newly released HBO documentary series JAY-Z in 8. In the new docu-series, the 56-year-old rapper opened up about one of the painful chapters of his life, involving his estranged father, Adnis Reeves. Jay-Z was just 11 years old when his father, Adnis, left his wife, Gloria Carter, and their kids. In episode 4 of the docu-series, the rapper recalled meeting his estranged father a month before he passed away in June 2003.

During episode 4 of the eight-part HBO Max docuseries, the 56-year-old rapper recalled that the first time his mother, Gloria, planned the meeting with his father, Adnis, he did not show up. At the time, Jay-Z felt heartbroken and destroyed. The rapper shared that he knew that his estranged dad wouldn’t show up. Recalling the moment, Jay-Z mentioned that a week after the pre-planned meeting, his mom, Gloria, tried to fix another meeting. Jay-Z said:
“Call it a week later, she comes back, ‘Wanna meet your dad?’ I’m like, why are you doing this to me? No. She’s like, ‘You have to do it.'”
Eventually, Jay-Z agreed to another meeting fixed by his mother. This time, his father showed up, and according to Jay-Z, it was the only time they spoke in person as adults. The rapper mentioned he wanted to know every question he had while growing up. Jay-Z revealed that his father was initially ‘defensive’ before they actually began their conversation. He said:
“I’m asking all the questions, everything I wanted to know growing up: ‘How could you do that? I’m your child. The first 30 minutes, he was super defensive: ‘You can come see me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m a child. That’s not my responsibility to see you. How am I gonna get to you?”
Jay-Z explained that after his conversation with his dad, he felt lighter, as if chains surrounding his body began to fall off. The following week in May 2003, Jay-Z was looking for a place for his ailing father to live. According to Jay-Z, Reeves had liver damage, and it was Jay-Z’s sister, Andrea Carter, who found him dead at 53 in June 2003.
During the same episode, the 56-year-old rapper shared that if he had never spoken to his father before his death, he might have struggled much more emotionally afterwards. He also understood why his mom was persistent about him meeting his dad. Jay-Z mentioned that his mother knew that his father was sick. Jay-Z admitted that the conversation between him and his dad changed everything around him.
Earlier, in a 2005 interview with Rolling Stone, Jay-Z shared how painful it was for him to watch his father leave him and his family. He explained that as a child, he looked up to his father like a hero. So when his father suddenly left the family, it was deeply upsetting and affected him for many years. Adnis left Gloria and their children, Jay-Z, Eric Carter, Michelle Carter and Andrea Carter. At the time, Jay-Z was just 11 years old.
However, Jay-Z believed that his father was a good person. He then shared that although his father was a good guy, he left his family, which made him deeply upset. Jay added that after his father left him, he changed and became more guarded. He was afraid of getting attached to people because he did not want to be abandoned again.
Jay shared that helping his father in his final days was “the right thing to do as far as karma and everything.” The rapper mentioned that the conversation with his father helped him in many ways and that it was emotional and difficult, but it was not like a dramatic fight.
