The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) has ordered stringent action against two prawn processing units in Nellore district for allegedly violating pollution control norms, including discharging untreated effluents into canals.
APPCB Chief Environmental Engineer M. Rajasekhar inspected The Waterbase Ltd. at Ananthapuram in Thotapalligudur mandal and Abad Overseas Pvt. Ltd. at Kudithipalem in Indukurpet mandal on the directions of APPCB chairman Dr P. Krishnayya.
Officials found that both units were allegedly releasing wastewater without treatment despite having Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs). Solid waste was also being burnt instead of being scientifically managed.
The Waterbase unit was generating around eight tonnes of waste daily and Abad Overseas about 20 tonnes, officials said. Both units also lacked adequate measures for maintaining green cover and environmental protection.
Dr Krishnayya directed officials to initiate stringent action, including steps towards issuing closure orders, as per the rules. He warned of zero tolerance towards industries violating environmental norms and endangering public health, water resources and the environment.
