Amitabh Bachchan’s wife and veteran actress, Jaya Bachchan, has a long history of strained relations with the paparazzi. Recently, Jaya Bachchan was spotted in public with her daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda. The mother-daughter duo wore similar plain kurtis as they headed to the venue. At that time, the paparazzi tried to capture moments of the veteran star and her daughter; however, they didn’t seem interested in stopping to pose for the camera. Shweta walked ahead respectfully, but Jaya stood still and stared at the journalists.
Jaya Bachchan wore a mask, which made things worse, as her stern and judgemental look was the only part of her expression visible. The paps found her behavior extremely rude and hit back with sharp jabs. One of the paps present there asked Jaya why she was staring at them when they were just doing their job. He added that they were clicking Jaya’s photos only because she was Big B’s better half.
Amid the paparazzi’s debatable remark, Shweta came back and held her mother’s hand to get her moving. At that moment, a media member addressed Shweta and told her to take Jaya Bachchan away, hinting that they had lost enthusiasm and motivation to click pictures of the actress-cum-politician. The last and most brutal blow came when the paparazzi asked Jaya to give unpleasant looks to her husband, Amitabh Bachchan, rather than to the paps. The photographers said:
“Ai madam ghoor kahe rahi ho. Humne…aap Amitabh Bachchan ke wife ho isliye photo nikal liye. Le jao [Shweta] ma’am. Inhe [Jaya Bachchan] le jao. Ye aankhein Amitabh Bachchan ko dikhana, hume nehi.”

Jaya Bachchan has a history of tiffs with paparazzi
In December 2025, Jaya Bachchan attended an event hosted by Barkha Dutt. During the event, she said she is a product of the media, but has no relationship with the paparazzi. She stated that the paps have no training to represent the people of India, yet with phones in their hands, they follow you and pass comments. She pointed out the unnecessary remarks they make while shooting pictures and videos of a celebrity.
Jaya Bachchan further commented on the photographers, saying that people standing outside in shabby, drainpipe-type clothes, with mobile phones in hand, think they can record anyone and make comments. She said:
“But ye jo bahar drain-pipe type gande gande pants pehen kar, haath me mobile le ke. They think just because they have a mobile, they think they can take your picture and say what they want and the kind of comments they pass.”
Jaya’s comments sparked outrage among the paparazzi community, with popular pap Varinder Chawla saying he and his team have been in the business for years and have always been respectful towards celebrities, yet they didn’t receive the same from Big B and his wife.
Another top paparazzo, Manav Manglani, appeared on the Meri Saheli podcast, where he said Jaya Bachchan couldn’t connect with the paps to date as she is still stuck in the traditional space. Some other paps even threatened to boycott the PR work of her granson, Agathya Nanda’s movie, Ikkis due to her behaviour.
