Jayasurya’s upcoming mystery thriller Mayan – Chapter 1 has completed its foreign schedule in Russia, the makers have announced. The film, which began production with an extensive schedule in the country, will now move to its next phase, with the Kerala schedule expected to commence later this month.
Directed by Jithin K Jose, Mayan – Chapter 1 marks the filmmaker’s second feature after his directorial debut Kalamkaval, which starred Mammootty in the lead. The new film sees Jithin take on a mystery thriller centred around lesser-known rituals and traditions believed to have existed in Kerala.
The Russian schedule marks an important phase in the production, with the foreign locations expected to add another dimension to the film’s mysterious world. The team is now gearing up to return to Kerala for the next leg of filming.
A mystery rooted in Kerala’s obscure traditions
Mayan – Chapter 1 is built around the lesser-known ritual of vipareetha aaraadhana, along with other obscure traditions associated with Kerala. While the makers have kept specific plot details under wraps, the subject matter points towards a narrative that combines mystery with elements drawn from lesser-known cultural practices.
The screenplay has been co-written by Jithin K Jose and veteran filmmaker Raffi. The collaboration brings together a filmmaker who established himself with a tightly constructed investigative drama and one of Malayalam cinema’s most experienced writers.
The cast includes Nyla Usha, Vijay Babu, Aiswarya Raj, who was recently seen in Officer on Duty, and Jibin Gopinath, known for his role in Dies Irae. They join Jayasurya in what is shaping up to be an ensemble-driven mystery thriller.
The film also reunites Jithin with several members of the technical team from Kalamkaval. Faisal Ali, who handled cinematography on Mammootty’s film, is the director of photography for Mayan – Chapter 1. Mujeeb Majeed returns as the composer, while editor Praveen Prabhakar is also part of the team.
Jayasurya’s packed lineup
Mayan – Chapter 1 adds another intriguing title to Jayasurya’s busy lineup. The actor is currently awaiting the release of Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer, the long-gestating fantasy adventure that has been one of his most ambitious projects in recent years.
He is also set to share screen space with Vinayakan in Titans. The film is among the actor’s other upcoming projects and adds another genre-oriented title to his slate.
Jayasurya is additionally attached to Operation Tral, the directorial debut of composer Ratheesh Vega. The project is described as a military action thriller and marks another collaboration between Jayasurya and a filmmaker making the transition to direction.
For Jithin K Jose, Mayan – Chapter 1 represents an opportunity to build on the response to Kalamkaval while exploring a very different mystery. His debut drew attention for its atmospheric storytelling and investigative approach, and the new film appears to take that interest in mystery into a more culturally rooted space.
Produced by Rajeev Govindan under the Magic Moon Productions banner, Mayan – Chapter 1 has now completed one of its key production stages. With the Russia schedule wrapped and the Kerala leg expected to begin later this month, the film is steadily moving towards the next stage of production.
The makers are yet to announce a release date, but with the domestic schedule now approaching, more details about the film’s characters and story could emerge as production progresses.
