Kunchacko Boban is adding another promising project to his increasingly diverse slate. Hail Mary, the actor’s upcoming Malayalam film directed by debutant Vishnu Revikumar, has officially gone on floors. The makers announced the commencement of filming through social media, marking the beginning of a project that has already attracted attention for its ensemble cast and creative team.

Hail Mary was announced earlier this month, when the makers unveiled its title and first look. The film is based on a story by writer GR Indugopan and has a screenplay by Dr Neeraj Rajan and Martin Prakkat. For Neeraj, the project adds another interesting credit to a growing body of work that includes the screenplay of Dulquer Salmaan’s ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi and the co-writing credits on Mammootty’s Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse.

While details about the plot are being kept under wraps, the combination of Indugopan’s story and the writing team suggests that Hail Mary is aiming for a character-driven narrative. The project also marks the directorial debut of Vishnu Revikumar, who will be making his feature filmmaking bow with an established cast and an experienced technical crew.

An ensemble cast and a strong technical team

Kunchacko Boban leads an ensemble that includes several familiar names from Malayalam cinema. Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anu Sithara, Jagadish, Vinay Forrt, Suhasini Maniratnam, Hakim Shah and Kavya Ramachandran are part of the cast.

The presence of such a varied ensemble indicates that the film is likely to rely on multiple characters rather than being built solely around its leading man. For Kunchacko Boban, Hail Mary continues a phase in which the actor has increasingly moved between mainstream entertainers, thrillers and more performance-oriented material.

Behind the camera, the film has brought together several established technicians. Roby Varghese Raj is handling the cinematography, while Jakes Bejoy is composing the music. Chaman Chakko, who has edited several recent Malayalam films, is in charge of the cuts.

Hail Mary is jointly produced by Green Room Productions and Martin Prakkat Films. The film marks Martin Prakkat’s third production collaboration with Kunchacko Boban, following the critically acclaimed Nayattu and Officer on Duty. Their previous associations have resulted in films that combined strong storytelling with genre elements, making their latest collaboration one to watch.

Kunchacko Boban’s busy lineup

The actor has several projects in different stages of production and release. He was most recently seen in Unmadham, the directorial debut of editor Kiran Das. Written by Shahi Kabir, the film marked another collaboration between Kunchacko Boban and a filmmaker making the transition from a technical department to direction.

He is also set to headline Nere Chovva, directed by Renjit Varma, opposite Manju Warrier. The film adds another intriguing pairing to the actor’s upcoming slate.

Another project in the pipeline is 40 Days of House Party, directed by debutant Shifina Babin Pakker. The filmmaker is married to Jithu Madhavan, the director of Aavesham, adding another interesting connection to the project.

With Hail Mary now entering production, Kunchacko Boban’s lineup continues to reflect his willingness to collaborate with first-time directors while working alongside established names. For Vishnu Revikumar, meanwhile, the film represents a significant debut, with the director stepping into feature filmmaking with a project that brings together a formidable cast and crew.

As filming gets underway, more details about Hail Mary’s story, characters and release plans are expected to emerge in the coming months.
