Jefferson Lewis has been charged with murder over the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby.
Lewis, 47, was charged on Saturday evening, a week after the young girl went missing from Old Timers camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole thanked the officers involved for their “professionalism and dedication in reaching this outcome”.
Dole asked the community to respect the family as they dealt with their deep grief and sorrow.
Lewis had been in police custody since Thursday night, when he was found and bashed hours after the body of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby was found.
A crowd of hundreds converged on Alice Springs Hospital, where he was held, and police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as tensions rose.
On Sunday, police released further footage of the riot, which was estimated to have caused hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage.
More to come.
