Maine Senate Candidate, Graham Platner And Wife Share Heartbreaking Miscarriage Update After IVF

Maine Senate candidate, Graham Platner and his wife, Amy Gertner, are in the headlines. But it is not for any old controversy related to Graham. Instead, the couple opened up about a deeply personal loss. They shared that they recently suffered a miscarriage. The unfortunate news comes after the couple had openly discussed their fertility struggles and their desire to start a family. While the duo spoke about traveling overseas for IVF treatment, know more about the struggles and heartbreak.

Graham Platner and Amy Gertner announced their painful loss 

Graham Platner, 41, and his wife, Amy, 40, shared how after months of hope, their pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. In their statement, the couple explained how they were still trying to process the heartbreak. According to People, the couple mentioned that they wanted to “shine a light” on the reality of fertility struggles and pregnancy loss. Expressing their heartbreak, the couple said:

“We suffered that heartbreak recently, when we experienced a miscarriage. There are no words that fully capture the pain of this loss. To anyone who has experienced a loss like this: you are not alone.”

In turn, the duo also thanked their supporters who followed their fertility journey since the beginning. They admitted that the emotion attached to infertility and miscarriage is often overlooked in the public domain. But they intended to share their honest experiences to reach others dealing with a similar pain. Likewise, they aim to remind people that they are not alone in facing a pregnancy loss.

Graham Platner and Amy traveled overseas for IVF

Earlier in 2026, Graham Platner and Amy Gertner publicly revealed that they had traveled to Norway for IVF treatment. They had to make the difficult decision after finding out that the procedure would not be covered by Graham’s veteran insurance in the United States. Previously, they had explained that one IVF cycle at a hospital near their home in Maine could cost them approximately USD 25,000. In comparison, the cost in Norway falls around USD 5,500. The cost difference is also a part of Graham’s political argument for health reform. In turn, he initiated efforts to lower healthcare costs and improve access to fertility treatments.

Graham Platner’s political campaign 

Despite the personal loss, Graham Platner is a key figure in Maine’s Senate race. The former Marine officer and Oyster farmer started his campaign in 2025. Since then, he has built his political campaign around healthcare reform, economic inequality, and support for working-class families. In fact, his candid views on IVF have become a significant part of his political identity. He has argued that healthcare and reproductive care should not depend on wealth or insurance. On the other hand, Maine Governor, Janet Mills has stepped back from the Democratic Senate race, making him the likely nominee against Susan Collins.
