EXCLUSIVE: DJ Joel Corry has insisted that social media is a “really positive thing” when it comes to the music industry as he teases a new project that he is sure will “resonate” with the public at this time
Joel Corry has insisted that social media is a “really positive thing” for the music industry. The DJ, 37, found fame when he appeared on Geordie Shore alongside then-girlfriend Sophie Kasei, but went on to carve out a stellar career as a producer, and is perhaps best known for his chart-topping track Head & Heart, which he collaborated on with MNEK.
But the star has now explained that even though there is a lot of “competition” in the industry thanks to the accessibility of TikTok and other social media platforms, it can only really be a good thing because of how it opens him up to a wider audience.
He told The Mirror: “When I was 13 years old, that was before internet, I think, I’m that old now! I’m 37. So yeah, when I first started DJ, was on my vinyl in my bedroom on turntables. And then from there, I went into DJing on CDs. And then eventually, you know, then it’s USBs, and now social media is here.
“I’ve gone through all those stages of technology. So I’ve always been a bit old school because that’s where I came from. But I think you have to adapt with the times and I’ve grown through those different eras. And I honestly think nowadays we have the biggest platform opportunity to spread our music and market our music than we ever did before.
“Things do get overexposed, but now there’s more competition than ever because so many people are doing music and some People can master music so the competition is a lot higher now I also think the opportunities are there for young artists and artists who maybe don’t have a lot of backing behind them.
“To get their music out there and and you know gain fans across the world through social media So I think overall is a really positive thing.”
Joel has now teamed up with Compare the Market to create a remix based around the Meerkats from the price comparison website’s famous adverts. With lyrics from grime MC legend Scrufizzer, and complete with a dance craze that has gone viral, SIMPLES takes the company’s recognisable catchphrase and turns it into an anthem.
Joel, who has worked with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Rita Ora over the years, is sure that the new track will “resonate” with the UK at a time when humour is needed.
Asked if it is an attempt to make the country laugh, he said: “It definitely is. I think the British public love things that are a bit kind of random, a bit of a surprise. And social media these days and TikTok things just like that just seem to catch on. And everyone loves the SIMPLES advert and knows about the iconic Simples phrase from the Meerkats. So it really resonates with the UK public.
“It’s a bit of fun for people to, you know, have a bit a laugh with as well. As I said there’s a dance routine element with the song as well, so it’s something for people do on TikTok.
“And those things, they catch on sometimes and gain some real momentum. So, yeah, it’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out. I just hope people have some fun with it.”
SIMPLES (feat. Scrufizzer) [Joel Corry Remix] is available now on Spotify, YouTube and other major streaming platforms with all royalties from the track supporting Teenage Cancer Trust, helping fund specialist nurses, youth workers and dedicated NHS hospital units for young people with cancer.
