Actor Johnny Galecki is finally returning to acting after 7 long years. For those unaware, he had stepped back from the spotlight after ending his run on The Big Bang Theory in 2019. Talking about his comeback, Johnny revealed that one of the biggest sources of inspiration for his comeback was his family life with his wife, Morgan Galecki. Amid this, here’s a look at when Johnny and his ex-girlfriend, Kayley Cuoco had an emotional time making The Big Bang Theory’s third season.
Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco had to play their characters breaking up soon after they split in real life
Anthony Rich, who had directed several episodes of The Big Bang Theory, opened up about his first episode during a recent podcast of The Official Big Bang Theory hosted by Jessical Radloff. At the time, Johnny Galecki’s character, ‘Leonard’, and Kaley Cuoco’s character, ‘Penny’, had just broken up an episode earlier, at the end of The Wheaton Recurrence. By the time they began filming for the next episode, The Spaghetti Catalyst, Johnny and Kaley had broken up in real life too.
At the time, Johnny and Kaley had been dating for about two years and split “four to six weeks” before Anthony’s first episode. According to host Jessica, the duo had handled it beautifully. She said:
“And by all accounts, they handled it beautifully, but no doubt about it, it was really, really difficult. So now their characters are breaking up, and this is just hitting a little too close to home.”
Anthony Rich revealed that while Johnny and Kayley had no issue with playing their characters’ breaking up, what they didn’t understand was what had “actually happened” to their relationship in reality. By the end of the episode, viewers saw ‘Penny’ storm off without actually getting to see their fight, and they called it quits.
Fans of the show believed that there was a missing scene or two in between, but Anthony explained that the writers did not want to go for a “real sad breakup episode.” Near the end of the script, ‘Penny’ and ‘Leonardo’ come face to face in their apartment’s laundry room.

While Johnny and Kaley both felt like the show was “not giving proper attention to the demise of the relationship,” they struggled to even get through it. Anthony recalled that when he went to discuss the scene with the actors, Kaley couldn’t hold back and “started sobbing.” He said that she was crushed by “the weight of it all.” This prompted the actress to go off the stage and take a few minutes to herself. Later, when Anthony found her on ‘Penny’s’ set, she had still not stopped sobbing. He shared:
“She goes, ‘I thought I could handle it, but it’s kinda catching up to me.’ And then she looks at me and she’s like, ‘And I’m ruining your episode.’ I was like, ‘You’re not ruining my episode.’”
Johnny Galecki’s return to the stage
Recently, Johnny Galecki took to Instagram to announce that he is coming back from a 7-year acting hiatus to star in the Chicago stage play, Kowalski. Alluding to the time he spent with his wife and children since The Big Bang Theory ended, she wrote, “For the last seven years, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend more time living than performing.” He added:
“It turns out those aren’t separate pursuits for me. Honoured to return to the stage and in my city by the lake (where the embers never fade and) where I first began working, as one of my literary heroes, Tennessee Williams in Kowalski this fall.”
