BERHAMPORE: Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir on Monday accused the police of taking away the voter IDs of the members of Muslim community to stop them from exercising franchise at the Rejinagar assembly by poll in Murshidabad.
He alleged, “Police atrocities remain unabated. Cops of Beldanga police station forcibly took away EPICs from 500 Muslim voters at Kapasdanga village. They also threatened them not to vote and leave Rejinagar till the assembly bypoll is over.”
Mr Kabir then claimed that the police arrested three more AJUP workers, Ramesh Sheikh, Anarul Sheikh and Nurul Sheikh about which he lodged a complaint with the Election Commission.
Democratic Trinamul Congress candidate Mohammad Saifuzzaman echoed him also. “I’m also facing the same problem. Police arrested one of our party workers and threatened the voters to leave the area till the by poll is over. It is not fair in democracy.”
Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury however said, “I have no knowledge about it. If Mr Kabir’s party workers feel insecurity, we can give them support. But the voters are apprehending a forcible voting. We demand free and fair by poll by the EC.”
