Exactly fourteen years to the day since Student of the Year first hit theatres, Karan Johar has pulled back the curtain on the franchise’s next, and most unexpected, chapter. Titled Student of the Year: After Dark, the new JioHotstar series takes the glossy campus universe fans grew up on and flips it into something far more unsettling.
Johar marked the anniversary with a nostalgic note on social media. “Nostalgia is working overtime this week!!! As we complete 14 years of our beloved SOTY franchise…we embark on a new journey, taking it forward, but it’s now in AFTER DARK!” he wrote, setting the tone for what’s clearly a deliberate departure from the franchise’s sunny, love-triangle roots.
Leading this new chapter is Shanaya Kapoor, marking her OTT debut in what Johar is already calling a defining moment for her. “Shanaya isn’t just stepping into the spotlight; she’s shattering it and the first look is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Reports suggest she’ll be taking on a powerful double-role performance, a significant departure from the typical campus-queen archetype the franchise built its reputation on.
Directed by Reema Maya and produced under Dharmatic Entertainment, the series swaps out the familiar college romance for mystery, danger and layered characters, all still set within the walls of St. Teresa’s, the fictional institution that’s anchored the franchise since 2012. The first-look visuals lean heavily into secrets and simmering tension, a clear signal that this isn’t another coming-of-age love story.
Johar, who wrote and directed the original film and went on to produce its 2019 sequel starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria, returns here purely as producer, handing creative control to Maya for this tonal reinvention.
Student of the Year: After Dark is set to premiere on November 13, giving fans just under a month to brace themselves for a very different kind of campus drama.
