Karnataka: BJP Forms A Committee Find Out Its MLAs Over Cross-voting Allegations

BENGALURU: Main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) constituted a 3-member committee in order to find out who all cross-voted in the Council elections on Thursday, its alliance partner Janata Dal Secular (JDS) stated the party has complete details on its MLAs cross-voted for the Congress nominees to make them win in 5 berths it contested.

Despite cross-voting, the prospects of BJP nominees-R. Raghu and Lingaraj Patil were unaffected and secured the needed votes of 28 to enter the Council. JDS nominee Govindaraju got 14 votes resulting in his defeat. The election of Council was held for vacant 7 seats.

While four Congress nominees-B.K. Hariprasad, P.V. Mohan, Shivanna and Thippanna Kamakanuru election to Council was certain going by the strength of Congress MLAs 135 and also the party enjoys support of 3 independents in 224 Assembly but there were doubts over the winning chances of Vinay Karthik. Vinay Karthik not only won but surpassed expectations by registering 32 votes. Vinay stated he expected 28 votes to get elected to the Council and his victory led to allegations of cross-voting by BJP and JDS.

Over allegations of cross-voting against some of its MLAs in the Council polls on Thursday leading to the victory of Congress party’s 5th nominee, State President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) B.Y. Vijayendra on Friday constituted a 3-member committee under its MLC and former minister C.T. Ravi, State Vice-President N. Mahesh and MLA Mahesh Tenginakayi. The Committee has been asked to submit its report by June 25.

BJP’s strength in the Assembly is 62. One of its expelled MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal announced to vote for BJP nominee and associate member of BJP Gali Janardhan Reddy supported BJP nominees taking the strength to 64. Raghu got 29 and Lingaraj Patil got 27 accounting for 56 votes.

Leader of Opposition in Assembly R. Ashok stated JDS fielded its nominee Govindaraju, upsetting the calculations leading to cross-voting. “Had JDS not fielded its nominee then 5 from the Congress and 2 from BJP would have been elected unopposed and problems would not have popped up.”

Union Minister of Large Scale Industries and State President of JDS H.D. Kumaraswamy said he had knowledge over the developments in his party and suspected four of our MLAs out of 18 cross-voted for the Congress nominees.

“I am not upset. I was aware who all would cross-vote and have all details with me,” said Kumaraswamy and clarified “I fielded the nominee to test who all are loyal to the party.”
