BELAGAVI: Nine members from Umrani in Chikkodi taluk were taken ill after allegedly consuming mushrooms collected from a field, health officials said on Friday.
According to authorities at the Chikkodi Public Hospital, the affected persons developed vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after consuming the dish prepared out of mushrooms and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The eight patients are stable and are likely to be discharged within a day or two. A pregnant woman, who was among those affected, was referred to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) as a precautionary measure. Her condition is also fine.
Doctors said the patients informed them that they had consumed a dish prepared out of locally collected mushrooms before falling ill.
One of the patients said the mushrooms had been brought home from a nearby field and cooked. Soon after the meal, several people began experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea.
“We collected the mushrooms from the field, and so did another family. We cooked them and ate them at home. After some time, all of us started vomiting and had loose motions. We were brought to the government hospital, where we received timely treatment,” he said.
“We later came to know that herbicide had been sprayed in the field a few days earlier. We were not aware of it. Without knowing that we brought the mushroom and cooked,” he added.
