The Brooklyn shop owner targeted by a furious Kelly Clarkson rant has revealed how the backlash left him concerned as the ‘entire weight of the internet came crashing down’
The furore over an automaton bird rumbles on after Kelly Clarkson was stopped from buying the item at a quirky art store. The singer was left raging after travelling 18 hours to the store and being told an item she fell in love with wasn’t for sale despite having a $15,000 (£11,000) price tag attached.
Now, as the online backlash continues and the neither are willing to back down, the shop’s owner has revealed the pile on caused by Kelly’s public comments left him “fearing for safety”.
Owner of Art of Play in Brooklyn, Adam Rubin, explained the star with simply told she couldn’t have the specific item, but was not told to leave. As the CCTV footage was shared, Kelly was seen looking unhappy before exiting.

Fifteen minutes late an she had posted her negative experience to her millions of followers. Adam says that decision had consequences for him and his store.
Speaking to Page Six, he said: “It’s just like [a] he-said-she-said thing, right? So she’s going to say one thing, I’m going to say another thing. The point of it is, nothing happened in the shop that was so dramatic that it’s worth throwing a Molotov cocktail into a mom-and pop-business.”
And he admitted he is finding it hard to forgive the star for her actions. He went on: “It’s so hard to forgive her actions after she walked out the door.
“She knew what was going to happen. She knew that the entire pressure of her millions and millions of fans around the world were going to come to the service of their queen and weaponise themselves and debase themselves on behalf of a millionaire they have never met.”
Explaining how it felt like the “entire weight of the internet came crashing down” in the moments after Kelly’s outburst, he said: “We started getting flooded with hateful phone calls and threats and text messages. They are doxing our neighbours. Like, this is crazy.”
Because of the way the story has blown up, Adam has said the shop has taken the decision to up the $15k price tag due to its newfound fame.
“We have raised the price from $15,000 to $15 million,” he said. “And if somebody walks into the shop with $15 million, they can take the thing off the wall and enjoy it in their home.”
When the feud first came to light, Kelly branded the store owner “rude” and a “liar”. She had claimed the initial responses to her complaints were met with fabricated stories.
