Chennai: Actor and politician Khushbu Sundar has strongly criticised Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over his alleged remarks targeting actor Trisha Krishnan, calling the speech “crass, cheap and deeply derogatory” and demanding an unconditional public apology.

In a post on X, Khushbu said the remarks reflected “the very political culture he seems eager to inherit” and questioned the standards of public discourse.

“If those with such a mindset aspire to lead a political party and one day govern the state, then God help us,” she wrote. “What else can one expect from people who treat abusing, degrading and insulting women as a form of political theatre, basking in the applause, whistles and laughter of their loyal supporters?”

Khushbu said insulting women should never become part of political discourse and warned against normalising such language.

“Those who normalize such language should remember that once the dignity of women is made a political casualty, no family, including your own, is immune from the same treatment. Public discourse must have boundaries, regardless of political differences. Women need to be respected and not treated as a pawn to play to your whims and fancies,” she said.

She further alleged that personal attacks and vulgarity were being used as a substitute for political debate.

“When you know you cannot match the performance, vision or leadership of your political opponent, resorting to personal insults and vulgarity becomes the easiest escape,” she wrote, adding that controversies surrounding political leaders should never become “the standard for public life.”

Khushbu concluded by demanding that Udhayanidhi issue an unconditional public apology to Trisha.

“The Leader of the Opposition owes Trisha an unconditional public apology for insulting her on a public platform. Let’s see if he can own up to his actions and has the courage and decency to apologise,” she said.
