Chittoor: The Chittoor district court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for murdering her two minor sons in 2017 to continue her extramarital relationship. The court found Pavitra (34), a resident of Kavvampalli village in Ramakuppam mandal of Kuppam Assembly constituency, guilty of killing her sons, aged six and three, and imposed a life sentence along with a fine of Rs 1,000.
The accused, who was married to Vema Reddy, entered into an extramarital affair with a tractor driver, Vemanna. She had also run away to Tirumala to be with him; however, elders from both families intervened, convened a meeting, and reprimanded them. Vemanna subsequently relocated to Bengaluru, but he continued to visit her occasionally.
She decided to kill her children, thinking they could become an obstacle to their relationship. On September 9, 2017, she brought the two children home from the local Anganwadi center, hanged both children from the ceiling fan with a nylon rope, and brutally murdered them. Pavithra also took three thousand rupees from the house and fled with her paramour.
Upon returning home, Vemareddy found his children lying dead. He immediately lodged a complaint with the Ramakuppam police. The then Sub-Inspector, Suresh Babu, registered a case and initiated an investigation. Just four days after the incident, the Village Revenue Officer (VRO), Sriramulu, produced the two accused before the police. During police interrogation, the woman confessed to her crime. A thorough investigation was conducted in this case, and a chargesheet was filed in court, along with the evidence.
The trial, which spanned a period of nine years, concluded on May 26, 2026. The charge of murdering her own children was proven, and Pavithra was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 1,000, with IX Additional District Court Judge N. Srinivasa Rao delivering the final verdict. The court, however, acquitted co-accused Vemanna due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
