Kurnool: A cordon-and-search operation conducted by police in Sriram Nagar and other localities in Kurnool town on Tuesday triggered resentment among residents, several of whom alleged that police personnel behaved high-handedly and ransacked their houses without sufficient reason.
The operation was reportedly conducted ahead of the elections.
However, residents alleged that instead of focusing on suspicious houses and individuals, police entered the homes of ordinary citizens and scattered household belongings, leaving families upset and humiliated.
A woman in Sriram Nagar reportedly questioned the police over their conduct, asking why residents were being treated worse than thieves.
Residents alleged that police personnel rummaged through cupboards and wardrobes, scattering sarees and other household articles.
Some women also alleged that they had received phone calls in which they were abused in objectionable language.
Questioning the manner in which the operation was conducted, local resident S. Nagaraju asked whether entering houses in large numbers and disturbing household belongings could be justified as part of a cordon-and-search operation.
“Is there any need for the police to behave so indecently with ordinary citizens?” he asked.
The operation has caused considerable resentment among residents, who said police searches should be conducted professionally, with due respect for the dignity and privacy of families.
The allegations have raised questions about the manner in which the operation was carried out.
