Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lived in Frogmore Cottage after the late Queen gave the property the couple as a wedding present in 2018, but they left the UK for California less than two years after

Frogmore Cottage is expected to return to the “pre Meghan and Harry era” as £2.4million renovations are set to be reversed.

The final traces of the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ link to the property are on the verge of being erased as the extensive work will likely subdivide the house. It was transformed from two semi-detached houses into one larger property after the late Queen gave the couple the cottage as a wedding present in 2018.

But Harry and Meghan left the UK for California less than two years after this, and were officially evicted from Frogmore Cottage by King Charles in 2023, since when it has been empty. The Duke and Duchess no longer have a home in the UK, although Harry wants to return with Meghan and their children Lilibet four, and Archie, seven, if his security is reinstated following an ongoing Home Office review.

“It’s (Frogmore Cottage) been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn’t good enough for him to move in. Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it,” a source said.

It took almost a year to transform the home for the Sussexes — including creating a yoga studio, replacing ceiling beams and floor joists, rewiring the electrics, and installing new gas and water mains.

Father-of-two Harry paid back the £2.4million six months after leaving the property, which is part of Home Park in Windsor, Berkshire. Now, options are reportedly being looked at at how the new renovations will alter the address, but it is thought it will go back to being two buildings.

Referring to the royal address’ lengthy past, the source told The Sun: “It would draw the line under Frogmore Cottage’s controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era.” Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was offered Frogmore Cottage in exchange for surrendering his lease on the nearby thirty-room Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park in 2023.

After Harry and Meghan were gifted the property, the couple paid for their own fixtures and fittings, including a £5,000 copper bathtub, and decoration by Soho House designer Vicky Charles — which included vegan paint.

They moved in shortly before Archie was born in 2019, but later that year relocated to Canada. The following January, they announced plans to step back as working royals and leave the UK. They now live in California in the US.
