VIJAYAWADA: The State Election Commission has informed the High Court that it would keep the nomination papers and self-affidavits of the contestants in the local body elections available on its website, for the public to view.

The SEC informed the court that it would make a web link available on its website so that those who click on the link would be able to access the official websites of the departments of panchayat raj and municipal administration to access the details of the contestants.

SEC explained to the court that it has asked the commissioners of both the departments on October 29 to upload the details of the contestants on their official websites one day before the conduct of elections.

A two-judge bench of chief justice Lisa Gill and justice Challa Gunaranjan heard the matter here on Friday.

SEC counsel Ashwani Kumar submitted points to the court and the court expressed its satisfaction with the SEC’s prompt action.

Nusiveedu-based V Siva Karthik had filed a PIL in the court seeking a direction to the SEC to ensure that the details of contestants in the form of nomination papers and affidavits are accessible to the people online.

Petitioner’s counsel Yogesh Tandava expressed his satisfaction over the decision of the SEC.
After hearing both the parties, the court issued an order closing the hearing on the PIL.
