Chennai:India-Japan relations are poised for further growth, with Japanese companies expected to expand their presence in India and contribute to the economic development of both countries ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, said Muneo Takahashi, Consul General of Japan.
Speaking at the inauguration of the full-scale operations of OMRON Healthcare’s manufacturing facility in Chennai on Friday, he said the factory was an example of the growing economic partnership between the two countries and Japan’s commitment to India’s industrial development.
He said the investment aligned with the Centre’s Make in India initiative and would strengthen OMRON’s long-term presence in the country. Tamil Nadu has emerged as an important destination for Japanese investments, supported by its strong industrial base, skilled workforce and infrastructure.
Describing India-Japan cooperation as extending beyond trade and investment, he said both countries could work together to address major societal challenges, particularly cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.
He noted that OMRON’s initiatives to promote regular blood pressure monitoring and early detection could contribute significantly to improving public health and quality of life.
Takahashi expressed hope that the manufacturing facility would expand further, generating local employment and creating opportunities for technology transfer and business partnerships.
Deepak Jacob, managing director of Guidance Tamil Nadu, hailed the opening as a milestone for the state’s medtech sector. The facility will produce high-value medical electronics, beginning with digital blood pressure monitors.
The plant will also boost local MSMEs across precision tooling, molding, and electronics services. Emphasizing inclusive growth, Jacob lauded OMRON’s legacy of integrating persons with disabilities into the workforce, noting that the plant will serve as a model for inclusive manufacturing across India.
“Under the OMRON Group’s long-term vision, Shaping the Future 2030, we are working to address three key social challenges: achieving carbon neutrality, realizing a digital society, and extending healthy life expectancy. OMRON Healthcare’s role is to contribute to the third of these, helping people monitor their health as a natural part of everyday life and access appropriate medical care when needed,” said Ayumu Okada, president, OMRON Healthcare Co., Ltd.
