Mammootty has officially begun filming for his upcoming project with Falimy director Nithish Sahadev. On Monday, the veteran actor took to his social media handles to announce that he had joined the sets, sharing a carousel of pictures from the ongoing schedule in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu.

The images offered fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the production, showing Mammootty arriving on set and interacting with members of the crew. While the makers are still keeping the film’s title and first look under wraps, the latest update confirms that principal photography is progressing steadily after the project was formally launched with a traditional pooja ceremony in Kochi last month.

The film is being produced under Mammootty’s home banner, Mammootty Kampany, which has backed several of the actor’s recent ventures. The production house has increasingly become synonymous with ambitious, filmmaker-driven projects, giving directors the freedom to experiment with genres while placing Mammootty in refreshingly different roles.

Behind the camera, the film reunites a talented technical crew. Acclaimed cinematographer Jimshi Khalid is handling the visuals, while composer Vishnu Vijay, known for his distinctive musical sensibilities, has been brought on board to score the soundtrack.

An action entertainer with a regional flavour

Originally announced in February 2025, the untitled film is jointly written by Nithish Sahadev and Anuraj OB, who previously collaborated on Antony Varghese’s Oh Meri Laila. Although the makers have remained tight-lipped about the plot, Nithish had earlier revealed to Filmfare that the film is conceived as an action entertainer with Mammootty playing a powerful local gangster.

One of the more intriguing aspects of the project is the actor’s preparation for the role. Mammootty is expected to speak in the Malayalam dialect of the Marthandam-Nagercoil region, suggesting that language and regional identity will play a significant part in shaping the character. The supporting cast and official title are yet to be announced.

The project also marks another significant step in Nithish Sahadev’s fast-rising career. The filmmaker made an impressive debut with Falimy, the 2023 family drama starring Basil Joseph that won praise for its humour and emotional depth. Earlier this year, he successfully entered Tamil cinema with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, a political satire led by Jiiva that performed well at the box office, further establishing him as one of the promising young voices in South Indian cinema.

For Mammootty, the film adds another exciting collaboration to an already packed line-up. The actor continues to balance commercial entertainers with auteur-driven cinema, a combination that has defined the current phase of his career.

His forthcoming slate includes Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayaatra, Khalid Rahman’s much-awaited Mattancherry Mafia, which also stars Naslen and Asif Ali, and his return to Tamil cinema with Om Chapter 1: Udhiram – The Blood Wood. Directed by Amaran filmmaker Rajkumar Periasamy and headlined by Dhanush, the multilingual project has already generated considerable buzz among fans.

With filming now underway in Karaikudi, anticipation is expected to grow around Mammootty and Nithish Sahadev’s first collaboration. Between the promise of an action-packed gangster drama, a rooted regional backdrop and the actor stepping into yet another distinct character, the untitled film is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched Malayalam releases on the horizon.
