BHUBANESWAR: A tense situation unfolded in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Tuesday after a man, suspected to be mentally unstable, climbed to the top of a 33 KV high-voltage electric pole, triggering panic among local residents.

The incident occurred in the Poparada area, where bystanders spotted the man precariously perched atop the towering structure and immediately alerted emergency services. Given the high-risk nature of the situation, concerns mounted over the possibility of electrocution or a fatal fall.

Fire service personnel rushed to the spot and launched a cautious rescue operation. Trained firefighters climbed the pole and began engaging the man in conversation in an effort to calm him and prevent any sudden movement. The operation required patience and precision, as even a minor misstep could have resulted in serious consequences.

After sustained efforts, the rescue team successfully persuaded the man to descend. He was brought down safely without any injuries, much to the relief of onlookers who had gathered at the site.

The individual was identified as Naresh Marandi. Preliminary inputs suggest he may be suffering from mental health issues, though officials said this has not been medically confirmed.

Authorities credited the swift and coordinated response of the fire services for averting a potential tragedy. The incident also highlights the challenges faced by first responders in handling high-risk situations involving vulnerable individuals.

In a similar episode last month, a youth had climbed a high-voltage transmission tower at Biragobindpur under Ghasipura police limits in Keonjhar district, causing alarm among locals. He too was rescued safely after hours of negotiation by police and emergency personnel.

“The rescue mission was successfully accomplished as the public alerted us about the incident in time. There is the need for timely public alert and sensitive handling of such cases to ensure both safety and dignity of individuals involved,” said an official who was part of the rescue exercise.
