Vijayawada: A man posing as a railway official lured a woman to a cabin in an AC coach and allegedly raped her on the Visakha Express while it was heading for the Vijayawada Junction railway station at night on April 26.

The woman, along with her husband, hailing from Rentachintala village in Palnadu district, have been living in Visakhapatnam for some time.

On April 26, at about 4pm, she along with her husband boarded the Visakha Express (17015) at Visakhapatnam railway station on their way to her native village Rentachintala. They had no reservation or berth.

At about 11.45pm, when the train was on its way to the Vijayawada Junction railway station an unknown person posing as a railway official approached the couple sitting near the washrooms, and claimed he was the TTE incharge of the H1 coach. Speaking in Hindi, he said one vacant berth was available in an AC cabin and he would give this to them.

Trusting his words, the woman accompanied him to the AC cabin while her husband continued the journey sitting there itself.

The man took her to the AC cabin, closed its door and raped her though she resisted his advances.

After reaching home, the woman informed her family members about the rape. Based on their advice, the victim reached the Rentachintala police station and lodged a complaint there in the evening on April 28.

Accordingly, the police registered a zero FIR, to be forwarded to the government railway police in Vijayawada for investigation and action. A railway police official based in Vijayawada said, “Once we receive the FIR, we will take up an investigation.”

Meanwhile, AP women commission chairperson Rayapati Sailaja made a video call to the victim and inquired about the incident on Wednesday. She promised efforts to ensure justice to her by nabbing the culprit and punishing him.
