Matt Baker is back with a brand new series as he bids to make life easier for his parents.
Matt Baker has set to work making some changes after his dad, Mike, suffered a fall.
Presenter and avid farmer Matt Baker is back on screens tonight, October 13, with a new series titled Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales, which sees Matt and his family transform an old site beside Matt’s parents’ farmhouse into a new home of their own. In the first episode, Matt and his wife Nicola begin clearing out decades’ worth of belongings and build a new path after Matt’s father, Mike, has a fall.
But with other challenges involving sheep to deal with, the everyday demands of farm life wait for no one. When Matt was a child, his parents bought a farm west of Durham, which they moved into and renovated.
Ever since, Matt has set out to make life easier on the farm for his ageing parents, including mum Janice, who had a tragic accident back in 2021. Janice was knocked to the floor and trampled while herding sheep, which resulted in multiple injuries. Here is all you need to know about Matt’s family.
Matt Baker’s parents’ health update
Both of Matt’s parents, Mike and Janice, feature in the new series and at the start of October, Matt took to Instagram to share a video of himself with his wife and parents as they announced the exciting news. In the caption, he penned: “We’re back with a new series but with quite the twist…We’re calling it Our Barn in the Dales as Nicola and I are converting the barn, stable and granary at the end of the courtyard into a cottage.”
He went on to say how the two-season series will include “all the things you loved in the previous series with the animals, mum, dad and not forgetting his classic car – spoiler, we finally finished it!” His parents both participated in the sweet video, with his dad, who was seen holding a walking stick, revealing the question he gets asked the most is whether his car had been finished.
Janice was seen looking happier than ever as she shared that she was often asked whether a new series would be made. Back in February, she celebrated her 70th birthday, with Matt taking to Instagram to pay tribute to his mum.
He said in a sweet post: “70 amazing years packed full of fun and adventures, always inspiring us to go for it! Not a proper leap year birthday party for you this year, but 70’s definitely worth celebrating. Love you x”
While it appears both of his parents are optimistic about their health, Matt realised they are not getting any younger and is doing what he can to make their lives easier on the farm.
Matt Baker’s dad made a huge career change
Matt was born in County Durham, specifically Easington, where his dad ran a newsagent’s and his parents had a smallholding in the village. The presenter, who has one sister and two half-sisters, moved to Durham when he was 10 as his parents made a huge decision to sell up and start an organic sheep farm.
Matt has previously said his mum, Janice, had been the one who was most keen to move to the country, sharing: “She was adopted and doesn’t know much about her background, but she was drawn to the countryside. Before we moved, she said ‘This is the time’. It’s a beautiful part of the world.”
Matt took over running his parents’ farm after Janice had her accident there. In 2025, the star spoke on The Mid Point podcast about the conversations he had with his parents after the incident. He shared: “My dad, who’s not incredibly mobile now, was in a right state and what have you. “Straight away we were like, we’re going to come back and just assess the situation. And we got back, we’d been waiting for a long time for something to go wrong. It gets very nerve-wracking when you get to this phase in your life and your parents are getting older and you know what they’re doing is really practical and quite full on as a lifestyle.
“They never wanted to leave the farm, but it was getting very demanding, but you try and have a conversations, but parents being parents…and then this event happened and it was quite obvious to my mum straight away that things needed to change and so we decided to change the farm up.”
Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales starts on More4 on October 13 at 9pm
