Deebo Samuel is making a U-turn to the San Francisco 49ers after a year. Adam Schefter recently revealed that the 49ers have re-signed Deebo Samuel to a one-year contract, and the deal was reportedly worth USD 7 million. For those who don’t know, Deebo has been the 49ers’ biggest player, and he was first drafted back in 2019 and bagged the title of ‘wide back’ for his dual skills of being a wide receiver, as well as a running back.
Why did Deebo leave the 49ers?
It was Deebo’s skills that helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2021, with him scoring 14 touchdowns during the season. He had been with the 49ers for six years and had scored a total of 42 touchdowns. However, it was last year when the 49ers had to let him go. Back in March 2025, Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders. The reason for the same was mainly business, as the 49ers faced a severe salary cap crunch back then.
The Washington Commanders made a contract with Deebo for USD 17.55 million, however, after a year, the ‘wide back’ is returning to the 49ers. For the unversed, Deebo Samuel has been in a long-term relationship with Mahogany Jones. The duo has been together since 2019. Mahogany has been a strong pillar of support for Deebo’s NFL career. Last year, when Deebo had to leave the 49ers, Jones expressed her shock. She spoke about it on The Deebo Samuel Documentary, where she said she couldn’t believe it happened. She also added that, somewhere, she and Deebo both knew it would happen, but seeing it made them sit for a while and reflect. She said:
“When he told me the offer, I’m like ‘You lying. No, you’re lying,’ and he was like, ‘No, I’m serious,’ and I’m like ‘I can’t believe it’. I said, ‘We knew this day was coming,’ but to actually see it … we just both sat back and was like, ‘Wow.’”
While Deebo has always been ever-evolving in his NFL career, his girlfriend has her own identity. She began her career as an entrepreneur, launching her clothing line, Shades of Mahogany, and while it can’t be confirmed whether it’s still running, the page on IG showed last activity back in 2021. Nothing much about her and Deebo’s relationship is known; however, they have been together for the last seven years. The duo shares a son, whom they welcomed in 2021. Jones, speaking about welcoming a son with Deebo, said on The Deebo Samuel Documentary that she was extremely nervous upon finding that she was pregnant, while her boyfriend was excited and already started making plans to dress like twins.
Being a father helped Deebo to be a better person, and it has also calmed his nervous system. Speaking to USA Today about being a dad, Deebo once said:
“I definitely have more patience now than I’ve ever had before. But, you know, my son comes first before anything else. My top priority is to ensure that he has a better life than I did growing up and just make sure he has not another worry on this earth.
