He was selected first overall by the franchise during the 2023 NBA draft. While many fans are worried about whether the Spurs will be able to win or not, a recent report by the NBA suggests that, although tempting, the Spurs will not play Victor Wembanyama every minute of regulation in tonight’s match. Who is Victor Wembanyama’s mother, Elodie de Fautereau?

According to reports, Elodie is a former member of the French national basketball team. She stands at 6 feet and 3 inches tall and currently coaches young children in the sport. Victor has often talked about how his mom was the one who introduced him to basketball. However, he did reveal that he has never trained with Elodie. Speaking with Euroleague Basketball, he stated: 

“She teaches basketball to really young players, like, from four to 10 or something like that. But for performance, I never trained with her. It’s not that she doesn’t want to get involved in my performance, but she knows her role. You know what I mean? And she knows as a parent sometimes it’s better to fade off or not to get too much involved in your children’s path.”

Reportedly, Victor Wembanyama spent many years in his early childhood at whichever gym Elodie was coaching in at the time. During an interview with Slam Online, he admitted that he had the choice and he still has the choice to play or not play basketball, but it is something that has always been around. According to Victor Wembanyama, he can’t ignore basketball because it is in his family. 

During the same interview, Victor noted that he and his mom’s resemblance goes beyond the physical. He said, “She’s more like me. We really look alike, and she’s kind of eccentric sometimes.” Victor and Elodie’s bond had been pretty visible in some of the most emotionally charged moments in his career. For instance, after the United States beat France in the gold medal match at the 2024 Olympics, TV cameras caught Victor falling into his mother’s arms as she consoled him at courtside. 

More recently, Elodie made an appearance before a Spurs playoff game in April 2026, just a day after Victor took home the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. When he was asked how he felt after winning his first major individual NBA honour, Victor looked towards his mom and told Sports Illustrated that it felt great, especially with his mother sitting next to him. After Elodie offered a wave to the camera, Victor added that his mom says something very true: “The real struggle may have been getting to 65 games.” 

It is worth noting that apart from his mother, Victor Wembanyama’s maternal grandparents, Michel and Marie-Christine de Fautereau, have both played basketball professionally. Additionally, his older sister, Eve, continues to play basketball professionally to date, while his younger brother, Oscar, has already bagged a junior national title with Victor’s former team, Nanterre 92. This is why it is safe to say that basketball essentially runs in Victor’s blood. 

Who is Victor Wembanyama’s father, Felix Wembanyama?

Victor Wembanyama’s father, Felix Wembanyama, was born in Belgium and is of Congolese origin. Standing at 6 feet and 6 inches tall, he is a former track and field athlete. He has reportedly competed in high jump, long jump, and triple jump. If reports are believed to be true, Felix acquired French nationality in February 2003, less than a year before the Spurs player was born. 

Although Felix had quite the influence on Victor while growing up, it was reportedly less about basketball and more about movement, technique, and discipline. Speaking about his father during a conversation with Euroleague Basketball, he said, “You know, there’s a correct way of running. And he taught me things like that. Apparently, Victor has also spent a year competing on a track and field team. He told Slam Online:

“Dad gave me the passion for knowing subjects in depth. Being a real technician of sports, of whatever I do.”
